TYWLS, Astoria is the second school to open in partnership with the YWL Foundation and The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

TYWLS of Astoria creates a community of lifelong learners that successfully prepares young women for college. TYWLS of Astoria is committed to nurturing the intellectual curiosity, creativity, and developmental needs of its young women. The school community cultivates dynamic, participatory learning and enables students to experience success on many levels, especially in the fields of math, science and technology. Students are supported to achieve their personal best in and out of school.

TYWLS of Astoria instills in its students a sense of community, responsibility and ethical behavior that help make them leaders of their generation, today and tomorrow.

The focus at the school is on Math, Science and Technology and the theme is Women’s Studies and Leadership. At TYWLS of Astoria, college preparation and awareness begin in the 6th grade. College exploration is integrated into all aspects of the curriculum. A full-time CollegeBound counselor, funded by the YWL Foundation, will be assigned in the 10th grade.  He/she will focus on guiding students and their families through the complex college admissions and financial aid processes. Prospective 6th grade students and their parents must attend an open house. At the open house, students are expected to participate in a family conference and complete a TYWLS of Astoria application.

TYWLS of Astoria, in partnership with the YWL Foundation, provides students with after-school and summer enrichment programs. Current after-school partnership programs include Power Play, City Parks Foundation, Museum of the Moving Image, Brooklyn Arts Council and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. YWL Foundation Field Program CoordinatorTara Goulet is busy planning field trips, hosting guest speakers and preparing/initiating community service projects.
