In 2006, The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria (TYWLS, Astoria) opened with a class of sixth graders – this is our first school serving students younger than grade 7. TYWLS, Astoria is a replication of our flagship school in East Harlem, in partnership with the NYC Department of Education and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The school prepares low- income students of color with an outstanding college-prep education, offering a personalized, dynamic, hands-on learning environment where girls can thrive academically.
