The Irma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School (Dallas, TX - affiliate school)
YWL Foundation partnered with Lee and Sally Posey, a Dallas businessman and philanthropist, and the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) to open a Leadership Academy in Dallas, TX. The Poseys are also the founders of The Foundation for the Education of Young Women (www.feyw.org), the Texas counterpart to YWL Foundation.
The Irma Rangel Leadership Academy school is located in Fair Park, home to many museums. The school opened in August 2004 under the leadership of Principal Vivian Taylor-Samudio with 125 girls in grades seven and eight. It will ultimately serve 525 students in grades six through 12. The purpose of this school is to nurture the intellectual curiosity and creativity of young women and to address their developmental needs. The mission of the school is to cultivate dynamic, participatory learning, enabling students to experience great academic success. Students are encouraged to achieve their personal best as they prepare for college.
The school in Dallas presents students with a project-oriented curriculum incorporating cooperative learning activities into a discussion-based atmosphere. The school curriculum emphasizes math, science and technology and provides instruction in foreign languages, advanced placement courses and the humanities. Special partnerships with other educational and cultural organizations enhance the curriculum. The school has a college preparatory curriculum that includes a strong math, science and technology component. The Dallas school partners with Austin College of Sherman, Texas to create a leadership program focused on young women.
